How Does Your Body Lose Body Fat? The Science Explained Simply

Most people know they need to "burn fat" to lose weight.

But what does that actually mean?

Does body fat simply melt away during exercise?

Does it disappear when you sweat?


And if you're burning more fat during a workout, does that automatically mean you'll lose more body fat?

These are some of the most common misconceptions I hear as a nutrition coach and Personal trainer.

The truth is much more interesting.

Once you understand how body fat is stored, released and burned, it becomes much easier to ignore fad diets, misleading marketing and the endless stream of "fat-burning" products promising shortcuts.

Let's follow the journey of body fat from beginning to end.


What Is Body Fat?

Most of the fat stored on your body exists as triglycerides.

A triglyceride is simply one glycerol molecule attached to three fatty acids.

Think of triglycerides as your body's long-term energy reserve.

Whenever you eat more energy than your body needs at that moment, some of that energy can be stored as triglycerides inside specialised fat cells.

This isn't a problem.

It's exactly what your body is designed to do.

Storing fat after a meal doesn't mean you've "failed" or suddenly gained body fat. It's simply part of normal energy regulation.


Step 1: Body Fat Is Stored Inside Fat Cells

Your body stores triglycerides inside cells called adipocytes, more commonly known as fat cells.

Imagine each fat cell as a small fuel tank.

When more energy arrives than your body currently needs, triglycerides are added to the tank.

When your body needs extra energy later, those triglycerides can be removed again.

One interesting fact is that most fat cells don't disappear when you lose weight.

Instead, they simply become smaller as they empty.

It's a bit like letting the air out of a balloon rather than throwing the balloon away.


Step 2: Fat Is Released From Storage

When your body needs energy between meals, overnight or during exercise, it begins breaking stored triglycerides apart into glycerol and free fatty acids.

This process is called lipolysis.

Many people assume this is the same thing as losing body fat.

It isn't.

Lipolysis simply means fat has left the fat cell.

Whether that fat is actually used is another question entirely.

A helpful way to think about it is a savings account.

Taking money out of your account doesn't mean you've spent it.

You could put it straight back.

Your body can do exactly the same thing with released fatty acids.


Step 3: Fat Travels Through The Bloodstream

Once released, free fatty acids need to travel to tissues that require energy, such as your muscles.

Because fat doesn't mix well with blood, these fatty acids hitch a ride on a transport protein called albumin.

Think of albumin as a taxi.

Its job is to carry fatty acids safely through the bloodstream to where they're needed.


Step 4: Fat Is Burned For Energy

Once those fatty acids reach your muscles, they enter tiny structures inside the cells called mitochondria.

Mitochondria are often described as the powerhouses of the cell because this is where much of your body's energy is produced.

Inside the mitochondria, fatty acids are converted into ATP, the energy currency your cells use to do work.

This process is known as fat oxidation.

In everyday language, it's what most people mean when they say they're "burning fat."


Burning Fat Is Not The Same As Losing Body Fat

This is one of the biggest misunderstandings in weight loss.

During a long, steady walk, your body burns a higher percentage of fat as fuel than it would during an all-out sprint.

That sounds like the perfect fat-loss workout.

But here's the catch.

Burning more fat during one workout doesn't automatically mean you'll lose more body fat.

Why?

Because your body isn't only burning fat.

Throughout every single day, your body is constantly:
  • Storing fat
  • Releasing fat
  • Burning fat

These processes are happening simultaneously.

What determines whether your body fat increases or decreases isn't what happened during a single 45-minute workout.

It's whether, over days and weeks, you burn more fat than you store.

That's the difference between fat oxidation and body fat loss.


Where Does Lost Body Fat Actually Go?

This is one of my favourite questions because the answer surprises almost everyone.

Many people believe body fat is:
  • Sweated out
  • Turned into muscle
  • Converted directly into energy
  • Simply disappears

None of these are correct.

When body fat is oxidised, most of it leaves your body as carbon dioxide when you breathe out.

The remainder leaves mainly as water, which is excreted through urine, sweat and other bodily fluids.

In other words, body fat doesn't vanish. You literally breathe most of it out.

Why This Matters

Understanding this changes the questions you ask.

Instead of wondering:

"Am I in fat-burning mode?"

or

"Did I burn enough fat during my workout?"

A better question is:

"Over the course of this week, am I burning more fat than I'm storing?"

That shift in thinking changes everything.

It moves your focus away from chasing magical workouts, supplements or meal timings and back towards the habits that actually matter.
  • Consistent nutrition.
  • Regular movement.
  • Strength training.
  • Enough protein.
  • Good sleep.

And a calorie intake that allows your body to gradually use more stored fat than it replaces.

The Bottom Line

Your body is incredibly dynamic.

It's constantly storing fat, releasing fat and burning fat.

Those processes don't happen one after another.

They happen all day, every day.

Successful fat loss isn't about staying in a mythical "fat-burning mode."

It's about consistently creating the conditions where, over time, your body burns slightly more fat than it stores.

Once you understand that, many of the biggest myths surrounding weight loss begin to fall away.

Can you lose body fat while still eating carbohydrates?


If you've spent any time on social media, you've probably heard statements like these:
  • "Carbs turn straight into body fat."
  • "White bread is stored as fat."
  • "Insulin stops fat burning."
  • "High-GI foods make you gain weight."
  • "If you want to lose fat, avoid carbohydrates."

It's easy to understand why these ideas have become so popular.

They contain small pieces of truth wrapped inside an explanation that sounds logical.


But human physiology is more interesting and far less simplistic than that.

The good news is that understanding what actually happens after you eat carbohydrates doesn't require a degree in biochemistry.

Once you understand a few basic principles, most of these myths become much easier to see through.


Let's follow the journey of a carbohydrate from the moment you eat it.

Step 1: Carbohydrates are broken down into glucose

When you eat foods like bread, rice, oats, potatoes, fruit or pasta, your digestive system breaks most of the carbohydrate down into glucose.

Glucose is one of your body's preferred sources of energy.

It travels into your bloodstream where it can be delivered to the tissues that need it.

As blood glucose begins to rise, your pancreas releases a hormone called insulin.

This is the point where many nutrition myths begin. People often hear the word insulin and immediately think:

"Fat storage."

But that's not insulin's primary job.


Step 2: What insulin actually does

Insulin's main role is to keep your blood glucose within a healthy range.

Think of insulin as a traffic controller rather than a fat-storage hormone.

Its job is to help glucose move safely from your bloodstream into your cells, where it can be used or stored.

Without insulin, blood glucose would remain elevated, which is harmful to tissues throughout the body.

Insulin helps direct glucose towards several destinations:
  • Your muscles
  • Your liver
  • Your brain and other organs
  • Other body tissues that need energy

Most of the glucose from a typical meal does not become body fat.

Instead, your body follows a priority system.

Step 3: Your body's priority list

After eating carbohydrate, your body generally has three options.

1. Use it immediately for energy

If your muscles, brain or other tissues need energy, glucose is burned straight away.

This happens continuously throughout the day.

2. Store it as glycogen

If the glucose isn't needed immediately, much of it is stored as glycogen.

Glycogen is simply the storage form of carbohydrate. It's found mainly in your muscles and liver.

A useful analogy is to think of glycogen as your body's rechargeable battery.

You fill it after eating.

You gradually drain it during everyday activity and exercise.

This is why physically active people often tolerate larger amounts of carbohydrate than sedentary individuals, they regularly empty and refill their glycogen stores.

3. Convert some into fat (under certain conditions)

Only after your immediate energy needs have been met and carbohydrate intake remains very high over time does another pathway become more important.

This process is called de novo lipogenesis.

The name sounds intimidating, but it simply means:

"Making new fat."

During de novo lipogenesis, your liver converts some excess carbohydrate into fatty acids, which can then be assembled into triglycerides and stored.

Here's the important point:

In healthy people eating a typical mixed diet, this is not your body's preferred way of handling carbohydrate.

Your body generally prefers to:
  • burn carbohydrate
  • store it as glycogen

before converting a meaningful amount into fat.

That's very different from saying:

"Carbs turn straight into body fat."


So why do people think carbohydrates become body fat?

This is where insulin is often misunderstood.

After you eat carbohydrate, insulin rises.

As insulin rises:
  • carbohydrate burning increases
  • the release of stored fat decreases
  • fat burning temporarily decreases

That last point is true.

But it doesn't mean carbohydrates are being sent directly into fat cells.

It simply means your body has switched to using the fuel that has just arrived.

Imagine filling your car with petrol.

It makes sense to use the new fuel you've just added before dipping further into your reserves.

Your body behaves in a similar way.

After a meal containing carbohydrate, it naturally burns more carbohydrate and temporarily relies less on stored fat.

That's normal physiology, not evidence that you're gaining body fat.

What happens if a meal contains both carbohydrate and fat?

This is one of the most misunderstood parts of nutrition.

Suppose you eat a meal containing both carbohydrates and fat.

Your body generally begins burning more of the carbohydrate because it's readily available.

Since carbohydrate is now providing more of the energy, your body burns less fat during that period.

As a result, more of the dietary fat from the meal may be stored for later use.

Notice what happened.

It wasn't that: Carbohydrate → Body fat.

Instead it was: Carbohydrate eaten → Carbohydrate burned → Less fat burned temporarily → More dietary fat available to be stored.

It's a subtle distinction, but it's an important one.

Do high-GI foods make you gain body fat?

Another common belief is that foods with a high Glycaemic index (GI) automatically cause fat gain.

Again, the reality is more nuanced.

The Glycaemic Index measures how quickly a carbohydrate-containing food raises blood glucose compared with pure glucose.

High-GI foods generally produce:
  • a faster rise in blood glucose
  • a larger insulin response

That part is true.

What doesn't automatically follow is:

"High GI equals more body fat."

Whether you gain or lose body fat still depends on your overall energy balance over time.

You can lose body fat while eating potatoes, rice or white bread.

You can also gain body fat eating predominantly lower-GI foods if you consistently consume more energy than your body needs.

Another important consideration is that the Glycaemic Index is measured using foods eaten in isolation.

In real life, most meals contain protein, fat and fibre, all of which influence the overall blood glucose response.

That's why focusing exclusively on the GI of a single food often misses the bigger picture.


Can you lose body fat while eating carbohydrates?

Yes.

In fact, millions of people do.

Athletes, active individuals and many successful dieters consume carbohydrate every day while maintaining a lean body composition.

Carbohydrates are not inherently fattening.

They provide an efficient source of energy, help replenish glycogen stores after exercise and can form part of a healthy, satisfying diet.

The question isn't:

"Are carbohydrates good or bad?"

The more useful question is:

"Does my overall diet support my goals?"

If there's one idea I'd like you to remember, it's this:

Your body doesn't usually treat carbohydrate as something that needs to be turned into body fat.

It has a clear order of priorities.

  1. Use carbohydrate for energy.
  2. Store some as glycogen for later.
  3. Only under sustained excess does converting carbohydrate into fat become a more meaningful pathway.

Insulin isn't the villain it's often made out to be.

It's an essential hormone that helps regulate blood glucose, coordinate fuel use and keep your metabolism functioning normally.

Once you understand that sequence, many of the most common nutrition myths begin to fall away.

Instead of fearing carbohydrates, focus on your overall eating pattern, stay physically active, include plenty of minimally processed foods, and remember that long-term body fat is determined by the balance between the energy you consume and the energy you expend over time.

Nutrition Advice: "Just listen to your body"

My body: "A muffin the size of a football sounds quite reasonable at the minute"

I hear this advice all the time.

“Just listen to your body.”

It sounds like great advice but the problem is that many people don’t actually know what their body is telling them.

After years of dieting, emotional eating, snacking out of habit, eating while distracted and eating because food is available our internal signals can get a little noisy.

Sometimes hunger is hunger.

Sometimes it’s boredom.

Sometimes it’s stress.

Sometimes it’s the giant muffin sitting on the counter.

That’s why I think “just listen to your body” is often incomplete advice.

A better approach would be to listen to your body... but also educate it.

Learn what happens when you:​

  • eat more protein
  • eat regular meals (with no snacks in between)
  • eat at similar times
  • include fruits and vegetables
  • sleep more
  • exercise consistently

Over time, your appetite often becomes easier to interpret.

You start noticing the difference between:

  • hunger and cravings
  • satisfaction and fullness
  • fuel and comfort

Intuitive eating is a skill and like most skills, it takes practice and it’s not something you’ll pick up immediately (especially after years of faulty eating patterns or diets and detoxes)

If your body is currently asking for a muffin the size of a football, don’t panic.

Mine occasionally does too.

8 Quick Lunches That Won't Have You Reaching For The Biscuit Jar At 3pm

The 3pm biscuit hunt is usually not a willpower flaw.

Sometimes it’s just lunch letting you down.

A tiny salad, a lonely sandwich (I heard this term last month and have always wanted to use it 🤪) or grabbing whatever is closest between meetings might technically count as lunch but it often doesn’t keep you satisfied for very long.

A more filling lunch usually has a few things going for it:

  • Protein.
  • Fibre-rich carbs.
  • Some healthy fats.
  • A bit of colour and crunch from fruit or veg.

Nothing fancy and nothing perfect but just enough structure to stop you walking into the afternoon underfed and craving sweet treats.

These lunches are quick, simple and built for busy workdays.

Save this for the next time you’re staring into the fridge wondering what to make for lunch.
